Why Goddess of Gourmet chose Greece for the crisis (if she had to)

Skopelos, our Mamma Mia island, turned out to be a real challenge on 14 Aug. Anna and Savvas had been spoilt rotten by their yiayia food wise. Emma and I had desperately tried to “re-intoduce” to them healthy eating, but, in vain. Any argument about the crisis, poverty and definition of abundance, just wouldn’t work. Until Anna asked the platinum question; “daddy, when are you going to lose some weight?”

That was it. I said: “listen, if you want me to lose some weight, eat healthily, etc. we all have to contribute to that. I’ll give you a project. You have all our garden has, all we take from our relatives and 30 euros to create the perfect diet for me for a week. Pre-requisites:

  •  we use staff from our garden
  • we use staff we have at home already from our own and relatives’ produce (olive oil, flour, feta cheese, etc.)
  • only 30 EUR for butcher, fish monger, etc.
  • make sure daddy consumes not more than 1800 Kcal per day

The “other front” was Emma, Anna and Savvas. Emma helped them do all the Internet research.

The following came from our garden:

  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Apricots
  • Peaches
  • Grapes
  • Melons
  • Watermelons
  • Tomatoes
  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Chickpeas (for humus)

  • Courgettes
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Okra
  • Green beans
  • Potatoes

  • Pomegranates
  • Herbs

The following came from our relatives’ produce that we exchanged:

  • Eggs

  • Whole-meal flour
  • Red wine
